Certification is not limited to one particular language. The exact service depends on the source language, target language, document and requirements of the organisation receiving it. Examples include Polish-to-English birth certificates, Italian-to-English marriage certificates, Greek-to-English marriage certificates, Korean-to-English birth certificates and Polish-to-English university degree certificates.

Choosing the correct service

What a language pair means

A language pair identifies the language of the original document and the language required for the completed translation. Both are needed before the project can be assessed and assigned. See our certified translation overview for guidance on the certification information to check.

Example format

Source language → target language, together with the document type, intended use and destination.

  1. Identify the source language

State the language currently used in the document. Mention whether the document contains more than one language or includes handwritten text, stamps or seals.

  2. Confirm the required target language

Use the instructions supplied by the authority, university, court, employer or other organisation receiving the translation.

  3. Explain where the translation will be used

The intended use helps determine whether you need standard certification, notarisation or additional document handling.

  4. Provide your deadline

Standard and express options are available. Availability depends on the language pair, document length and project requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about certified translation languages

Confirm the final requirements with the organisation receiving your translated document before placing an order.

Which languages can be used for a certified translation?

Certification is a format applied to the completed translation, rather than a restriction to one particular language. UK Document Translation lists support for a range of language pairs. Confirm your exact source and target languages when submitting the document.

What should I do if my language is not displayed?

Upload the document and state both the source and target languages. A language not appearing in the common directory does not automatically mean the pair is unavailable.

What information should I provide with the language pair?

Include the document type, intended use, destination country, required deadline and any instructions supplied by the receiving organisation. Make sure every page and visible stamp or handwritten entry is included.

Can a document contain more than one language?

Upload the complete document and identify each language you recognise. The files can then be assessed according to the number of languages, document length and required target language.

How long does a certified translation take?

The listed standard option is 2–3 working days. A 12–24 hour express option may also be available. Timing depends on the language pair, document length and service availability.

Does every certified translation need notarisation?

No. Certification and notarisation are different requirements. Select notarisation only when the organisation receiving the translation specifically asks for it, or confirm its instructions before ordering.

What kind of file should I upload?

Upload a clear scan or high-resolution photograph showing the complete document. Include every relevant page, reverse-side content, stamps, seals, signatures and handwritten notes.
